The energy grid is the heart, pumping power to every organ of civilisation. It still beats mostly on fossil fuel — ~80% of world primary energy — which chokes the arteries with CO₂. The cure is a triple bypass: fusion for dense clean power, renewables for cheap mass generation, and storage + smart grids to keep the pulse steady when the sun sets.
01FOSSILS STILL DOMINATE
Coal, oil and gas supply about 80% of the world’s primary energy; for electricity alone the figure is near 60%.IEA · 2024
02SOLAR’S PRICE COLLAPSE
Solar module costs fell roughly 90% during the 2010s — the fastest energy-cost decline in history, making solar the cheapest new electricity in many regions.IRENA / IEA
03FUSION IGNITION ACHIEVED
In December 2022, the National Ignition Facility got more fusion energy out of a fuel pellet than the laser delivered in — the first time in history.LAWRENCE LIVERMORE · 2022
- Heat deuterium-tritium gas to ~150 million °C — ten times the Sun’s core — so nuclei collide hard enough to fuse.
- Superconducting magnets weave a magnetic bottle that suspends the plasma without touching any wall.
- Fusion releases helium + fast neutrons; their heat boils water and drives turbines, exactly like a conventional plant.
THE LIMITATION
No fusion device has yet produced net electricity for the grid. ITER targets 500 MW out for 50 MW of heating (Q = 10) in the mid-2030s — but a real power plant must run for months, not seconds, and breed its own tritium fuel.
- Pumped hydro — water pumped uphill — still stores over 90% of the world’s grid energy.
- Battery packs fell nearly 90% in cost since 2010, making hours-scale storage routine.
- Smart grids shift demand to sunny and windy hours in real time, so fewer giant plants sit idle.
Kill vampire loads (chargers and standby gear draw power all night), switch bulbs and devices to efficient modes, and ask what powers your school — rooftop solar is a science project that pays.
