The ocean is the bloodstream: it moves heat around the planet, has absorbed about a quarter of our CO₂ and most of the extra heat, and feeds over three billion people. But the chemistry is shifting — acidification thins the shells of everything from corals to plankton, and plastic travels the vessels like debris in an artery. The cure is cleaning the flow and closing the loop.
01OCEAN = 26% OF THE CLEANUP
Seawater absorbs roughly a quarter of all human CO₂ emissions every year, dissolving it into carbonic acid.GLOBAL CARBON PROJECT
0230% MORE ACIDIC
Surface pH has slid from ~8.2 before 1850 to about 8.04 today. The scale is logarithmic — that 0.16-unit drop is a ~45% rise in acidity.NOAA
03THE GARBAGE PATCH
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch holds an estimated 1.6 trillion plastic pieces — about 80,000 tonnes, most of it fishing gear and micro-debris.THE OCEAN CLEANUP · 2018
- A floating U-shaped barrier is towed slower than the wind-driven plastic, so the plastic drifts into the mouth of the system.
- Retained plastic is lifted onto support vessels every few weeks; river Interceptors stop waste at the source before it reaches the sea.
- Sorted and recycled into glasses, headphones and boat hulls — proving ocean plastic has value.
THE LIMITATION
Skimming the surface will never outrun the tap: cleanups only work alongside reduced production, better waste systems and a global plastics treaty currently under UN negotiation.
- Kelp forests grow up to half a metre a day, buffer local pH and shelter fish nurseries.
- Rewilding rivers — removing obsolete dams lets salmon, sediment and nutrients flow again; the US alone removed ~80 dams in 2023.
- A circular economy keeps materials in use — repair, refill, remanufacture — yet today under 10% of the world’s materials actually circulate.
Refuse single-use, refill, repair before replacing — and join one beach or stream cleanup this term. Sorting your recycling correctly matters: one greasy box can spoil a batch.

pH is logarithmic: each 0.1 step ≈ +26% hydrogen ions. Drag toward 7.8 to see where coral reefs begin dissolving faster than they grow.
